October 18–November 22
With its moody atmosphere, cynical antiheroes, and mysterious femmes fatales, the film noir genre that began in Hollywood in the mid-twentieth century has proven to be one of the most durable and globally influential cinema styles. This series looks at how filmmakers in China and Hong Kong have adapted and transformed the genre to reflect society’s ambitions and anxieties. This series is supported by the George Washington University Chinese Arts & Humanities Initiative.
