It doesn’t get any more neo-noir than this: Diao Yinan’s follow-up to his award-winning Black Coal, Thin Ice comes drenched in saturated neon colors, features a moody hero on the run, and even has its own femme fatale. When small-time gangster Zhou Zenong (superstar actor and singer Hu Ge) accidentally kills a cop, he flees to a seedy town on the titular lake in Wuhan Province. There he becomes involved with an enigmatic woman with mysterious intentions of her own, and finds himself embroiled with the local crime gangs. Peppered with shocking and imaginative action sequences, The Wild Goose Lake is “a definitive Chinese crime noir, in which the ravishing form and inventive staging form the substance” (Jessica Kiang, Variety).
(Dir.: Diao Yinan, China, 2019, 110 min., DCP, Wuhan dialect with English subtitles)
