In the spring of 2013, this poster was presented at the ICOM-CC Graphic Document Working Group Interim Meeting held at the Austrian National Library in Vienna.  The theme of the conference was “Paper Conservation: Decisions & Compromises.” The poster and extended abstract give an overview of Chinese handscroll conservation on the NMAA collection to help guide colleagues with similar collections.

Training and Education

  • The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Chinese Painting Conservation Workshop (April 2021)

This virtual workshop was hosted by the East Asian Painting Conservation Studio, Department of Conservation and Scientific Research, on April 6th and 7th, 2021.

The program featured presentations by five of the upcoming generation of Chinese painting conservators working in museums in the United States and the United Kingdom. The talks highlight a diversity of areas: education and training; cross-cultural exchange, outreach, and innovation; cooperative conservation projects that speak to these developments; and collaborative efforts across the broader landscape of Chinese painting conservation. The last several years have been pivotal for these upcoming conservators’ development and, more broadly, in the advancement of the field of conservation in the United States and abroad.

    The presenters include:

    • Yi-Hsia Hsiao, Associate Conservator of Chinese Paintings, The Cleveland Museum of Art
    • Grace Jan, The Yao Wenqing Chinese Painting Conservator, National Museum of Asian Art
    • Valentina Marabini, Conservator of Chinese Paintings, British Museum
    • Hsin-Chen Tsai, Associate Conservator of Chinese Paintings, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
    • Jianxiang Zhou, Assistant Conservator, The Metropolitan Museum of Art

We are grateful for the support of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and for the dedicated participation of all the attendees. We hope these presentations give insight into the field and help promote collaboration and exchange among our colleagues.
