Filming Policy

Media Photography and Filming Policy

Media may request access to photograph or film exhibitions, collections galleries, and programs of the National Museum of Asian Art. All media photography and filming requests require review and approval; if permitted, the activities must be supervised by a staff member in the Department of Marketing and Communications. Due to the high volume of inquiries, we are unable to accommodate all requests. For best consideration, we ask that you submit your request as far in advance as possible.

For safety and liability reasons, tripods and photography will not be allowed under any circumstances in spaces that are open to the public.

To protect artwork, light levels cannot exceed 5 foot-candles, or 50 lux.

Please note: the filming of children is prohibited unless the accompanying adult gives verbal and/or written consent.

Documentary Filming

All filmmakers who wish to film or use Smithsonian content in any products beyond short, timely news stories should refer to our FAQ sheet and filming application. To request images, please see the Images Services and Permissions page.
