Harmony in Brown and Gold: Old Chelsea Church

Painting of a late 1800's city, viewed from the countryside.

Chelsea Old Church, located a few blocks from Whistler’s home at 101 Cheyne Walk, is a prominent feature in the artist’s depictions of the Chelsea skyline. When Whistler’s mother moved from America to England to live with her son in 1864, she became a member of the congregation on Church Street. Through the church, she was able to forge connections in her new neighborhood.
