Director Ryusuke Hamaguchi (Happy Hour, the Academy Award-winning Drive My Car) crafts mysterious and thoughtful dramas out of the stuff of everyday life. In this haunting environmentalist fable, executives from a Tokyo-based developer come to the small mountain town of Mizubiki to reveal plans for a proposed “glamping” resort on nearby land. But the tight-knit community of locals struggles against this threat to their lifestyle and the natural environment they cherish.

Built on moments of subtle, absorbing drama and tension and filled with a deep appreciation of the natural world, Hamaguchi’s film lingers in the mind long after it’s over. Manohla Dargis writes in her glowing New York Times review, “I have watched Evil Does Not Exist twice, and each time the stealthy power of Hamaguchi’s filmmaking has startled me anew.”
(Dir.: Ryusuke Hamaguchi, Japan, 2024, DCP, 106 min., Japanese with English subtitles)
