This brilliantly constructed, Cannes Film Festival award–winning film finds director Hong Sangsoo at the height of his comedic and creative powers. Two friends—Moon-kyung, an aspiring filmmaker (Kim Sang-kyung, Memories of Murder), and Joong-sik, a depressed film critic (Hong regular Yoo Jun-sang)—get together for drinks. Their conversation spurs a series of flashbacks that reveal a baroque roundelay of awkward encounters, missed connections, and bungled flirtations: it turns out that the men spent the weekend in the same place, with the same people—including Moon-kyung’s mother (Yun Yuh-jung, who won an Academy Award for her performance in Minari)—without ever managing to run into one another. Hong’s characteristic biting humor and clever structural games are everywhere in evidence as these two clueless would-be womanizers meet their match in a high-strung tour guide—played magnificently by Moon So-ri (Forever the Moment, A Good Lawyer’s Wife)—who harbors an obsession with Korean naval hero Admiral Yi. (Dir.: Hong Sangsoo, Korea, 2010, 115 min., DCP, Korean with English subtitles)
