In Hong Sangsoo’s second feature, the themes and formal audacities that characterize his work begin to emerge in full. Set in the famous natural beauty of the titular province, it begins as the story of Jisook, who is vacationing with two friends to try to get over a disastrous affair with a married man. But then she meets a handsome married cop who is traveling alone, and she risks making the same mistake all over again. In the second part, Sangwon, her married ex-lover, also explores Kangwon Province with a friend. The paths of the two exes threaten to cross. Richard Brody in The New Yorker praised the “coolly bracing drama of the mysterious bonds of lovers.” (Dir.: Hong Sangsoo, Korea, 1998, 109 min., DCP, Korean with English subtitles)
