In partnership with the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, we welcome artisan in residence Gankhuyag “Ganna” Natsag, a Mongolian artist, painter, and sculptor who specializes in traditional mask making. During his residency, participants will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of Mongolian mask making through a thoughtfully curated series of events.
The program kicks off with a captivating artisan talk and demonstration during which participants will learn Ganna’s mask-making techniques and craft practices. Ganna will provide a lens into Mongolian arts and culture, and he will also explore the ways his masks are used in the traditional Mongolian ritual known as the tsam. The tsam is a Buddhist ritual performed by dancers wearing elaborate costumes and masks. Stay tuned and you might be able to catch a special dance performance!
About Gankhuyag Natsag
Gankhuyag Natsag is a prominent Mongolian artist known for his contributions as a painter and sculptor. He was born in 1961 in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. His artistic journey began at a young age when he apprenticed under his parents to learn various handicrafts, which laid the foundation for his artistic skills. He later pursued formal art education through schools, where he received training in various artistic techniques and styles.
Throughout his career, Gankhuyag Natsag created a consistent body of artwork and successfully executed numerous projects. His dedication to his craft and his unique approach to traditional techniques contributed to his growing recognition not only within Mongolia but also on an international scale. This recognition led to his status as an internationally renowned artist.
Gankhuyag Natsag's journey from learning traditional crafts to becoming a respected painter and sculptor showcases his commitment to preserving and innovating within Mongolian artistic traditions. His ability to combine traditional methods with contemporary artistic expression has contributed to his widespread acclaim. As a Cultural Envoy of Mongolia, he has played a vital role in promoting Mongolian art and culture on the global stage.
