Celebrate Chuseok, Korean Thanksgiving Day, with NMAA! Learn about both past and current traditions of one of the biggest holidays in South Korea. Take pictures in traditional Korean clothing known as hanbok and view a charye table display, which is a traditional feast prepared for a family’s ancestors. Enjoy special performances, food talks, programming from local community groups, and more!
This event is co-presented by the Korean Cultural Center of Washington, DC, and Onjium.

Program Details:
Hanbok Trunk Show with House of Leehwa: 10:30 a.m.–5 p.m.
Korean Photo Booth presented by the Korean Cultural Center: 11 a.m.–4 p.m.
Take a photo wearing traditional Korean clothing known as hanbok (한복), a hat known as gat (갓), a handheld fan, or buchae (부채), and more.
Find the photo booth in the Sackler flex space in the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery on level B1.
Korean Traditional Crafts & Coloring: 11 a.m.–4 p.m.
Make a Chuseok calligraphy postcard featuring your name translated using the Korean alphabet, known as Hangeul (한글). Use it to wish your family and friends a happy Chuseok!
Color a vibrant artwork displaying traditional foods, such as songpyeon (송편) and jeon (전), and traditional hanbok (한복) clothing.
Both activities will take place in the Sackler Pavilion in the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery on level 1.
Food on the Plaza: 12–4 p.m.
Food available for purchase from Lei Musubi, Tae-Gu Kimchi, Magpie and the Tiger, and Ahjummeow!

Enjoy traditional performances throughout the day outside on the Freer Plaza.
- 11–11:20 a.m.: Pansori (판소리) and Namdo Minyo (남도 민요) by Washington Sorichung
- 12–12:15 p.m. and 1–1:15 p.m.: Mega Drum Nanta (모듬북) and Gyeonggomu (경고무) by Di Dim Sae Korean Traditional Art Institute & First Generation Korean Academy (FGKA)
- 2–2:15 p.m. and 3–3:15 p.m.: Samdo Nongak Garak (삼도 농악 가락) by Washington Samulnori
- 3:30–4 p.m.: Ganggangsullae (강강술래) demonstration by Korean Traditional Arts Foundation
Panel Discussions
1–2 p.m.: Chuseok Food Traditions with chefs Yesoon Lee, Danny Lee, Hong Yon Cunningham, and Patrice Cunningham. Moderated by Peter Chang.
3:30 p.m.: Art, Tradition, and Chuseok with members of the Korean American Artist Collective.
