In the words of The New York Times, this blend of documentary and fiction “shows how Hong Kong residents have redefined themselves over time…. It is impossible to watch…without admiring their courage.” Taking as its starting point the massive 2019 anti-government street protests, Chan Tze Woon’s film profiles four of the participants, including a now elderly man who once swam to Hong Kong from the mainland to escape the Cultural Revolution. Through reenactments, documentary footage, and behind-the-scenes moments, Chan weaves together a fascinating history of Hong Kongers’ defiance, rebelliousness, and resilience. (Dir.: Chan Tze Woon, Hong Kong, 2022, 98 min., DCP, Cantonese, Mandarin and English with English subtitles
