In collaboration with the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, we welcome Artisan in Residence Han Soo Jung. Han Soo Jung is a Korean Traditional Hat Maker (called “Gannil”).

This workshop will introduce you to the old Korean traditional hat called GAT. Learn the history and beauty of GAT through Mr. Han Soo Jung's teachings. Come away from this workshop with some GAT-making skills!

Gannil has been a part of his life since 1999. Han Soo Jung learned his skill from his father, Choon Mo Jung, a bearer of Korea's intangible cultural heritage and the National Intangible Cultural Heritage of Korea designated Jung as a Gannil Instructor for Successor Training in 2015.

Over the last two decades, he has participated in many public demonstrations and exhibitions to promote the beautiful Korean heritage. Through collaborations with other crafts artisans, Olympic exhibition, TV shows and many other public demonstration opportunities, he has tried to promote his skills to the general public.
