In collaboration with the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, we welcome artisan in residence Han Soo Jung. Han Soo Jung is a Korean Traditional Hat Maker, also known as Gannil.

Gannil has been a part of Han Soo Jung’s life since 1999. He learned his skill from his father, Choon Mo Jung, a bearer of Korea’s intangible cultural heritage. The National Intangible Cultural Heritage of Korea designated Han Soo Jung as a Gannil Instructor for Successor Training in 2015.

Over the last two decades, Han Soo Jung has participated in many public demonstrations and exhibitions to promote the beautiful Korean heritage. Through collaborations with other crafts artisans, Olympic exhibitions, TV shows, and many other public demonstration opportunities, he has displayed and promoted his skills to the general public.

After the talk, join us the next day on Saturday, May 13, from 12:00 to 4:00 pm. Han Soo Jung will have a vendor booth in the Arts and Industries Building where he will showcase traditional hats and demonstrate the process of Gannil. Register for the Celebration of the Century on May 13th here.
