A must-see for Hong Sang-soo fans (his In Front of Your Face was an audience favorite at last year’s festival), The Novelist’s Film is “as close as Hong has come to dramatizing his own process” according to Dennis Lim, author of a book-length study of Hong’s work. Hong’s onscreen proxy is Jun-hee (Lee Hye-young of In Front of Your Face), a novelist who has grown disenchanted with her writing. After a chance encounter with a famous actress (longtime Hong collaborator Kim Min-hee) at a similar artistic crossroads, Jun-hee decides to make a movie with her. What follows is both a peek at Hong’s methods and an interrogation of what we expect of works of art, ending in a surprising final flourish that hints at a new direction in his work. (Dir.: Hong Sang-soo, Korea, 2022, 92 min., DCP, Korean with English subtitles)
