Hailed as “the best movie you didn’t see last year” by Vox’s Alissa Wilkinson, Return to Seoul is a beautiful, melancholy portrait of a lost soul trying to find herself. Artist Park Ji-min, in her first acting role, is extraordinary as Freddie, a French woman of Korean descent who decides on a whim to travel to Korea to look for her birth parents. As the film follows her over the course of several years, she goes through several chameleon-like changes of identity, revealing a complex character who may never be at home in the world. The film’s haunting atmosphere shows the influence such masters as Claire Denis and Hou Hsiao-hsien have had on second-time feature director Davy Chou. NPR’s Teresa Xie declared it “a film that’s easy to love: it has a killer soundtrack, a magnetic protagonist, and a gorgeous cinematic backdrop filled with rich colors.” (Dir.: Davy Chou, France/Belgium/Germany, 2022, 116 min., DCP, French, Korean and English with English subtitles)
