Based on the book The Tale of Heike, Inu-Oh’s Episode by Hideo Furukawa, this delightful film is very loosely based on the life of Inu-Oh (“King Dog”), a legendary fourteenth-century performer of the traditional form of folk theater known as Sarugaku (“Monkey Music”) as it was transforming into Noh theater. Forced to cover his entire body and face due to physical deformities, Inu-Oh discovers his talent for graceful, energetic dancing thanks to an encounter with a blind biwa player. The fact that few documents about Inu-Oh survive allows director Masaaki Yuasa to give his imagination free reign, including rendering Noh theater as a head-banging rock opera. “Spellbinding and utterly surprising . . . Inu-Oh is an exquisitely crafted story of diversity and creativity as contemporary as it is ancient” (Giovanna Fulvi, Toronto International Film Festival).
