In her directorial debut, Hong Sung-eun takes on the phenomenon called honjok in Korean, which describes young people who live alone and isolate themselves socially. Best known for her television roles, Gong Seung-yeon gives a remarkably nuanced performance as Jina, who works in a soulless call center, has recently lost her mother, and determinedly keeps to herself. But she is forced to question her solitary existence by a series of events, including the death of her similarly solitary neighbor, repeated calls from her grieving father, and a new employee who is determined to bring her out of her shell. Aloners boasts “acute character observation, impressive directorial control and a strong performance” by Gong (Jonathan Romney, Screen Daily). (Dir.: Hong Sung-eun, Korea, 2021, 91 min., DCP, Korean with English subtitles)
