Powered by a richly nuanced lead performance by Parasite’s Lee Jung-eun, Hommage is pure cinephile catnip. Lee plays Ji-wan, a film director with a faltering career and a loveless marriage to a jerk of a husband, played with gusto by Kwon Hae-hyo (best known for his work with Hong Sangsoo). Desperate for work, she takes on a job restoring A Woman Judge, a movie made by one of the few female directors working in the 1960s, who is now deceased. When Ji-wan discovers that crucial parts of the film are missing, she goes on a mission to find the surviving crew members so she can piece it together. The project gives her a new lease on life and an imaginary bond with her pioneering predecessor. Hommage is a deftly plotted story, a lament for the plight of independent films in the age of Marvel franchises, and a tribute to the women who inspired director Shin Su-won to make movies herself.
