The second half of our Hong Sangsoo double feature (and the second film he released in 2021) is a departure in a number of ways. Instead of the tales of bumbling love affairs and prismatic narrative structures he’s known for, In Front of Your Face is a fairly straightforward story of a woman harboring a secret. In her first film with Hong, renowned actress Lee Hye-young plays a former actress who has returned to Seoul after several years in the United States. Through conversations with her sister and a particularly intense encounter with a film director trying to lure her back into the business (Hong regular Kwon Hae-hyo), we gradually learn what may be behind her return. Centering his film on a middle-aged female protagonist is rare for Hong, but the way subtle details accumulate into powerful emotional moments is typical of his masterful filmmaking.
