Lee Joon-ik (The King and the Clown, The Throne) is known for his refreshingly irreverent takes on historical themes. Filmed in shimmering black and white in a beautiful seaside setting, The Book of Fish tells the story of the famed Joseon-era scholar Jeong Yak-jeon (Sol Kyung-gu). Exiled to a remote island because of his Catholic beliefs, he is taken in by a kindly widow (Parasite’s Lee Jung-eun) and befriends Jang Chang-dae (Byun Yo-han, star of the smash K-drama Mr. Sunshine), a young fisherman who aspires to become a scholar but lacks the resources. While Jeong provides books and instruction, Jang regales Jeong with his encyclopedic knowledge of sea life, collaborating on what will become Jeong’s masterpiece, The Book of Fish. (Dir.: Lee Joon-ik, Korea, 2020, 126 min., Korean with English subtitles)
