Biographical / Historical
Richard Ettinghausen (1906-1979) was a German born and educated scholar of Islamic history and art history. Educated at University of Frankfurt, he emmigrated to the United States in 1938. He taught at a number of institutions including the University of Michigan before joining the Freer Gallery of Art in 1944 where he became chief curator. Ettinghausen's extensive publications and exhibitions touched on many facets of Iranian art history contributed greatly to field.
