    Clay: white porcelain
    Glaze: clear feldspathic
Decoration: painted in underglaze cobalt blue of good quality in outline and wash. Outside is a thin running leafy scroll with four single flowers evenly spaced. Double line on outside of foot, single line near foot on base.
  • Label

This style of dish, with its central painterly motif surrounded by a border of floral panels, was closely patterned after the type of Chinese Wanli era (1573-1619) export ware known in Europe as Kraak Porselein, after the Dutch term for the Portugese carracks or galleons that transported the goods from China to Indonesia. The format, which is called fuyode in Japanese, was produced in both monochrome and enameled versions for the Dutch East India Company. Central motifs are often derived from bird-and-flower painting, but this one shows an attendant shading a scholar who is lost in contemplation of a blossoming plant.
