Pianist Utsav Lal, who wowed us in April accompanying Shiraz: A Romance of India, returns to our stage with another Movie/Music Matchup. Appropriately for Diwali season, A Throw of Dice is inspired by a tale from the ancient Sanskrit epic poem The Mahabharata. Royal cousins and rulers of neighboring kingdoms, King Sohat and King Rajit share a love of gambling and the danger of the tiger hunt. After a tiger severely injures Sohat, the beautiful young maiden Sunita nurses him back to health. They fall in love and marry, to the chagrin of jealous Rajit, who challenges Sohat to a game of dice where the stakes are nothing less than life itself. Featuring 10,000 extras, one thousand horses, and dozens of elephants, and gorgeously restored by the British Film Insitute, A Throw of Dice is a ravishing spectacle made all the better by Lal’s virtuosic playing. (Dir: Franz Osten, United Kingdom / India / Germany, 1929, 74 min., silent with English intertitles)

Steinway’s Young Artist of 2010, Utsav Lal made his debut at the age of eighteen with his rendition of Indian ragas on the piano, stunning the world with his innovative handling of Hindustani classical music on a Western instrument. Often referred to as the “Raga Pianist,” he has gained international recognition, performing everywhere from Ireland to Singapore, Germany to Kuwait, and beyond.
