In the final act of the play Ghost Story of Yotsuya on the Tōkaidō, Oiwa gets her revenge on her wicked husband, Iemon, and his associates for all the wrongs they have committed against her. Oiwa was born in the year of the rat, according to the Chinese animal zodiac, and sends swarms of rats to torment her enemies. When Iemon’s henchman Akiyama Chōbei comes to visit Iemon to deliver a precious document, Oiwa strangles him to death with a tenugui hand towel that she wraps around his neck. -
