This print represents the Second Domestic Industrial Exposition, an exhibition organized by the government of Japan to promote appreciation and marketing of its arts and crafts. The building shown is the bijutsukan or art museum that was constructed for the exposition. Representations of this building are relatively few, and this example is particularly significant as a design by the artist Kobayashi Kiyochika. Kiyochika, trained in both Japanese and Western art techniques, had a prominent role in establishing a modern style in Meiji era prints. -
