Object Details

  • Description

Small, hand built, buff cup with a rounded handle attached to one side. The sides slope gently outward and are rounded at the bottom edge. The rim flares out slightly, and the base is flat. The cup is decorated with brown paint. The inside of the rim of the cup is lined with a series of small dots. On the outside, the rim is decorated with a very small metope band. Below this band are large, "kite" patterns, filled with fine parallel lines. Between these kite shapes are crossed squares, or crosses which are made of two intersecting, opaque rectangles with a square in the intersection left buff. The handle has a series of horizontal stripes painted on it.
Intact except for scattered chips missing, most notably from around the rim. Wear and scattered loss of surface and loss of painted decoration. Overall, in very good condition. Scattered dirt/deposits.

Cemeteries and settlements in the Luristan region of western Iran have yielded examples of a distinctive painted ceramic style dating to the Iron II-III period (ca. 1000-600 BCE). Often called "Genre Luristan," this pottery is also known as "Baba Jan III Painted Ware" after Baba Jan Tepe, a large settlement where it was extensively excavated during the 1960s.
