• Label

  According to the artist, "My goal is to give full expression to the traditions of Kutani overglaze enamel decoration, and I also bear in mind the vessel's function. The process of throwing the form on the potter's wheel introduces movement to the porcelain clay, and I try to reflect that rhythm in my design. On this bowl, sprays of tradescantia formed the basis for a simplified pattern. After I fired the glazed porcelain form to 1270 degrees C, I outlined the design with cobalt formulated for overglaze application and filled the outlines with thick applications of strong-colored enamels. Another firing at 930 degrees C fixed the enamels."
