The artist wrote of this work: "In order to produce a linear pattern finer than any brush could paint, I inlaid different colors of liquid porcelain clay into incisions made with an extremely sharp knife. Before applying each color, I used wax to mask the areas I did not want to fill; after that color was applied, the wax had to be removed by low-temperature firing before applying the next color. Finally I applied the clear glaze and fired the piece at high temperature. These repeated firings create the possibility of damage. It took me a long time to learn how to overcome that difficulty, but recently I have finally gained some control over the technique and can create the kind of object I envisioned."
