Ma Yuanyu was born in Changshu, Jiangsu Province, where he learned painting from his father and continued the family tradition. He also studied under one of the leading painters of his time, Yun Shouping (1633-1690), who strongly influenced the development of his style. Another contemporary master, Wang Hui (1632-1720), whose work is also represented in the Sackler's collection, praised Ma's paintings for being lively and unconventional.
