According to the artist, "When the clay of this large bowl was still leather hard, I incised lines around the outside and a design of peonies in the bottom. After coating the peony design with pale green glaze, I covered the rest of the piece--except for the design—with colorless glaze. It has taken a long time to perfect the skill of firing pieces glazed in this way to 1300 degrees C without having the green glaze run and spoil the design. The contrast of the white and green glazes emphasizes the special beauty of porcelain."
