    [1] According to the artist, Tomioka Tessa himself, the patron of this hanging scroll was Mr. Kobayashi. Tessai’s inscription on the box lid states that he painted this on behalf of Mr. Kobayashi “爲小林氏.” There is also a seal pasted to the lid that reads “Kobayashi.” It is unknown when this scroll left Mr. Kobayashi's possession.
    [2] Mary and Cheney Cowles made the purchase on May 12, 2017, according to their recollection. The invoice from Kogirekai auction, Kyoto, Japan is also dated May 12, 2017, copy in object file.
