Object Details

  • Description

Description: Wide shallow bowl, walls rounding inward to everted plain rim, resting on short, trimmed foot. Base of vessel trimmed to widest diameter of body. Trimmed interior of foot slightly domed.
Clay: Coarse, sandy, grayish-brown stoneware with many white granules (color visible only in one place in vessel interior where slip popped off), appearing greenish-brown under glaze. Several small air bubbles in wall. One vertical hairline crack below rim.
Glaze: Dipped into white slip, which covers interior and exterior wall down to widest diameter of body. Small area of crawling in bottom center caused by too much moisture and thick slip. One trail of slip partially wiped off. Slip has popped off in two places in interior and in several places around edge of slip coating on exterior. Clear glaze covering entire vesel, including footrim. Footrim bears scars of five sandy refractory clay wads (ground down) used for stacking; other small fragments of wads adhere inside and outside foot. Glaze crackled, stained on interior.
