Object Details

• Description

  Small jar. Simple closed shape on wide flat bottom with plain rim rising slightly. Built by coiling and smoothing. Coarsely trimmed at base. Smoothed around rim.

  Clay: pottery, reddish brown on surface, showing brick-red where chipped or abraded.

  Decoration: entire outside surface covered by coarse lattice texture, seemingly made with a small carved stamp impressed at right angle to rim on shoulder, diagonally around lower body. Pattern is obscured by smoothing of rim, carving of base.

  [2] Helen Dalling Ling operated "The Green Dragon" antiques shop in Shanghai from 1938 to 1950 and a shop under her own name in Singapore from 1951 until her death in 1982.

  [3] Helen Dalling Ling left a bequest to her husband, Dr. Tien Gi Ling on May 1982.
