    [1] See object file for copy of list of objects submitted to the Regents of the Smithsonian Institution and the Commission of Fine Arts, for examination. Marked approved by the Secretary of the Smithsonian on January 30, 1970, object number 8 is described as “Turkish pottery dish; Iznik (16th century); grape design; wave pattern on foliate rim. V5.70; K-8.” It is one of two objects which were offered by Stuart Cary Welch to the Smithsonian.
    Stuart Cary Welch was a scholar, connoisseur, and collector of Islamic and Indian art, and his wife Edith Iselin Welch (1931-2009) shared his passion for art and collecting. Cary Welch had a lifelong professional affiliation with Harvard Art Museums, and as a professor at Harvard University until his retirement in 1995. In 2011, Sotheby’s London held a two-part sale of Welch’s collection, followed by “The Edith and Stuart Cary Welch Collection” sale in 2023.
