Object Details

  • Description

Bowl, Northern Celadon, with slightly curved sides, wide mouth, small foot; grooved outside the lip; kiln grit adhering to inside foot
    Clay: buff grey porcellaneous ware.
Glaze: olive green celadon glaze, crazed.
Decoration: carved lotus flower and leaf on the interior.
  • Label

The lotus blossom and leaf filling the interior of this bowl were incised by hand. Such decoration was produced during the same period as the molded decoration seen on other pieces in this case. The tool used was probably a piece of sharpened bamboo. Some of the decorative techniques, including use of carved and incised lines, may show the influence of south Chinese Yue ware on the northern kilns of the Yaozhou tradition.
