    [1] See Richard Stanley Baker, “Gakuō’s Eight Views of Hsiao and Hsiang,” in “Oriental Art” vol. 2, no. 3 (Autumn 1974): pp. 284, fig. 15, “The five Hsiao-hsiang works by Gakuō with which we shall be mainly concerned consist of the three paintings formerly in the Baron Gō collection, one of which is now in the Freer Gallery”. Baron Junzō Gō (1825-1910) was a shogun’s retainer, a statesman, and a bureaucrat in the Ministry of the Treasury. His son Seinosuke Gō (1865-1942) would serve as president of the Tokyo stock exchange, numerous businesses, and as a member of the House of Peers. Seinosuke was awarded the title of Baron and bequeathed a collection of netsuke to the Tokyo National Museum.

Despite Tanaka’s recollection, published in 1966, it is unknown when the object left the Gō collection.
