Since the fourteenth century, Jingdezhen, in south China's Jiangxi Province, has been the major production center for Chinese ceramics, including imperial wares. When this vase was made, Jingdezhen kilns were best known for their blue-and-white and polychrome porcelains, but the imperial workshop and private factories also made small quantities of celadon-glazed pieces imitating famous Song dynasty (960-1279) wares. A Longquan vase was probably the model for this piece.
