Whistler’s depictions of evening entertainments include Nocturne: Cremorne Gardens,No. 3, nearby, and etched images like these. The Square House captured buildings in Amsterdam’s red-light district. The same view by night in The Dance House: Nocturne makes a more explicit link to the activities going on inside. Rectangles of light pierce the gloom as they do in the Cremorne painting. An inscription on The Square House indicates Whistler chose this proof for Freer’s collection. The Cremorne Nocturne was the last Whistler oil painting that Freer acquired before his death, and The Dance House: Nocturne entered Freer’s collection around the same time.
Whistler etchings are identified by "G" numbers as assigned in "James McNeill Whistler: The Etchings, a catalogue raisonn&‌eacute;," by Margaret F. McDonald, Grischka Petri, Meg Hausberg, and Joanna Meacock (University of Glasgow, 2012), http://etchings.arts.gla.ac.uk. This print is G455 state 6 of 6.

A list of ten etchings...appears among a package of papers labelled: Invoices prior to 1893. This etching is one of that number.
It is given a 1906 registration number because it was included in the inventory of that year."
