Label
The shape, glaze, and dark clay body of this bowl echo early Karatsu ware. The decoration of pine boughs--rendered in iron and cobalt against “clouds” of white slip (clay solution)--was, however, inspired by designs of the Kyoto potter Ogata Kenzan (1663–1743). Hybrid “quotations” from historical ceramic modes were common in Kyoto workshops in the nineteenth century. -

During the summer, the company also maintained seasonal locations in Newport, Bar Harbor, and Atlantic City.[2] See note 1.[3] The original deed of Charles Lang Freer's gift was signed in 1906. The collection was received in 1920 upon the completion of the Freer Gallery. -
