SPIRAL
This print by Yoshida Chizuko includes elements of “op art,” or optical illusion. In both figurative and abstract work, Chizuko repeated shapes to find variety in similar forms. In this print, the spiral is obscured by repeated circles. The repetitive process is reflected in the shape of the spiral itself.
Yoshida Chizuko was a member of the multigenerational Yoshida family of printmakers. She was a print artist in the mid-twentieth century, when it was less common for women to be printmakers, and she also continued printmaking after her marriage, which was unusual. Chizuko used nontraditional materials in her work, such as plywood and string.
