MEDICINE BUDDHA BHAISHAJYAGURU

The flames surrounding the Medicine Buddha’s backplate represent his enlightened state and his ability to heal. Buddhist texts describe the Medicine Buddha as blue in color, shining brighter than the sun, and living in the Eastern Pure Land of lapis lazuli, a blue mineral. He is worshipped for his ability to cure physical and mental illnesses and for his ability to alleviate suffering from cold, hunger, thirst, and even mosquitoes.

This Medicine Buddha from Java, Indonesia, is very similar to eighth-century Indian sculptures of the same Buddha. Monks frequently traveled from Java to northeastern India, where they visited sites associated with the Buddha’s life and studied at the great Buddhist universities. They brought home images that inspired local artists.
