Sue Kim’s “affectionate and humorous” (Dennis Harvey, Variety) documentary tells the story of the haenyo, female divers who for centuries have harvested seafood off the coast of South Korea’s Jeju Island. Able to dive up to 100 meters and hold their breath for up to three minutes, these remarkable women—most of whom are senior citizens—are a dying breed, partly because of a lack of new recruits, and partly because of threats to the ocean’s ecosystem thanks to pollution and climate change.
Kim’s film revels in these women's feisty vitality while documenting their efforts to save their environment. Executive produced by Nobel Peace Prize-winner Malala Yousafzai, The Last of the Sea Women won the NETPAC Award at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival.
