This haunting, fairytale-like film won the Horizons section’s Special Jury Prize at the 2016 Venice Film Festival. In Big Big World, two orphaned siblings escape an abusive adoptive parent to live in the forest. There, they form a community of two and live off the alternately idyllic and dangerous land around them. Big Big World is “[s]aturated in rich color and laced with beguiling images of nature as a source of beauty, mystery, and menace” (David Rooney, Hollywood Reporter). The film exemplifies Erdem's deep appreciation of nature’s power. And like the Brothers Grimm, Erdem knows that fairytales often have a dark side.

(Dir.: Reha Erdem, Turkey, 101 min., DCP, Turkish with English subtitles)
