Casting a humorously ironic gimlet eye on the film festival culture in which he had by then become entrenched, Hong Sangsoo’s 2009 feature stars Kim Tae-woo (Joint Security Area) as Goo Kyeong-nam, an art house filmmaker who travels to Jecheon to serve on a film festival jury, the members of which mainly drink, gossip, and sleep through the movies. During a night of heavy drinking, he manages to offend his good friend’s wife before passing out and leaving the festival in shame. In one of Hong’s trademark bifurcated narrative structures, Goo then travels to another film festival on Jeju Island, where similar misadventures occur, with eerie parallels to his earlier trip. Lee Marshall of Screen International called it “wryly perceptive in its deconstruction of artistic egos, sending up pretensions while at the same time making what sound like first-person declarations about creativity. It’s also—and this is no small part of its appeal—Hong’s funniest film in years.” (Dir.: Hong Sangsoo, Korea, 2009, 126 min., DCP, Korean with English subtitles)
