Petty Pandean-Elliott will dive into the making of her new book, The Indonesian Table, published by Phaidon, through personal narratives and an exploration of recipes from across the archipelago.

Pandean-Elliott has created a comprehensive and personal book that presents 150 accessible recipes interspersed with recollections of her culinary journeys throughout Indonesia, beginning with her childhood memories in remote Manado. Now based in the United Kingdom, Pandean-Elliott spent several years developing and adapting recipes for home cooks using easily sourced ingredients and uncomplicated cooking methods.

Organized by traditional ingredients and dishes with introductory texts, the dishes in The Indonesian Table appear alongside stunning food images. All images are by photographer Yuki Sugiura, who travelled with the author throughout the country. The book and images reflect the history, heritage, colors, texture, taste, aroma, and the vast variety of ingredients of Indonesian food.

Following the talk will be a book signing and sampling of dishes, prepared by Chef Petty. Books will be available for purchase at the museum shop.

This talk/demo will take place in the Meyer Auditorium within the Freer Gallery of Art and will then move to the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery’s flex space on level B1, next to the gift shop, for the sampling and book signing. Books will be available for purchase at the museum shop.

Co-presented in partnership with Rumah Indonesia and Phaidon Publishing.
