“Sweet and charming” is how the New York Times’s A.O. Scott describes this drama directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda, who, in his films, “brings a gentle humanity and a warm playfulness to stories that might otherwise be unbearably grim.” Song Kang-ho of Parasite fame stars as an illegal baby broker who arranges for affluent couples to secretly adopt unwanted orphans. When one such deal falls through, he, his accomplices, and their tiny charge embark on a journey across Korea to find the baby a new home, pursued by an undercover cop played with wry humor by Bae Doona (Kingdom, Sense8). As in Kore-eda’s other films, including the Palme d’Or winning Shoplifters, Brokers exudes a deeply humanist sensibility: there are no good guys or bad guys, just flawed people trying to make their way in the world. (Dir.: Hirokazu Kore-eda, Korea, 2022, 129 min., DCP, Korean with English subtitles)
