This mind-bending thriller won the Hivos Tiger Award, the top prize at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. Two lovers on the run for unknown reasons catch a ride with a group of raucous men who, as the trip goes on, become increasingly menacing. Intercut with this tense storyline is stunning documentary footage of an ecstatic temple festival in Kerala honoring Muthumari Amman, an incarnation of the Hindu goddess Kali/Durga. By contrasting the extreme—and painful—physical exertions of the festival participants with the men’s taunting of the woman in the couple (who is named Durga), director Sanal Kumar Sasidharan creates an ominous atmosphere suffused with a critique of religious and patriarchal fervor.
