Ars Orientalis 53 Call for Papers

Ars Orientalis, a peer-reviewed annual journal published jointly by the Freer Gallery and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, and the Department of the History of Art, University of Michigan, is seeking article proposals for the 2023 volume, which is to be devoted to the collection of the Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery.

Celebrating the centennial of the Freer Gallery of Art, we invite submissions that will assess and reassess works in the Freer and Sackler collection (including the Freer and Sackler Archives) from an artistic, technical, iconographic, and cross/transcultural perspective.

Submissions should include a 250-word abstract of the article, a few samples of the visual material to be included with captions, and an author CV of no more than two pages. Please email submission materials to

Ars Orientalis is a digital publication with a print-on-demand option. The digital volume also allows for the incorporation of other media, such as video, sound, and 3D models. Articles for the journal typically range in length from 5,000 to 9,000 words, with no limit on the number of illustrations.

Article proposals are due April 1, 2021. Invited full articles will be due March 2022, with final acceptance subject to peer review. Authors are responsible for all image fees.
