This triptych records the attack by the Japanese army after dynamiting a defensive gate. Across the foreground, Chinese and Japanese soldiers engage in hand-to-hand combat. The artist Toshihide, a renowned illustrator, was particularly skilled in conveying the agony and action of battle scenes with a sense of photographic immediacy. The Japanese army wears Western military uniforms, while the Chinese soldiers wear their native garments. The straw sandals worn by the Japanese soldiers are the only remnants of their traditional clothing.
