This spectacular triptych depicts the major naval battle of the Yellow Sea, also known as the battle off Takushan or of Haiyangdao. A Japanese fleet of twelve warships confronted the Chinese Northern Fleet (Beiyang) of fourteen ships. The fierce battle resulted after only five hours in the loss of three Chinese vessels and damage to several more. Japanese rapid-firing artillery outfired the heavy artillery in which the Chinese fleet was superior. This print is a artistically brilliant rendering of the peak of that naval battle by the little-known artist Shuko.
